Star Wars killed Star Wars

<lj-embed id="18" />

There is so much wrong with this aside from the fact they are calling 4LOM Zuckuss. That Is just factually wrong, but here are the deeper issues at work.
- The commercial is for 4LOM/Zuckuss, Tie Fighter pilot, AT-AT , and Hoth Luke? What kid who want those? Unless you had the AT-AT or a Tie Fighter what good are those guys?
- The commercial ends with 4LOM/Zuckuss and AT-AT Commander? Why? What kid is going to be excited in that? At least throw Luke up there.
-You have the equivalent of a fighter pilot, tank commander, and freelance bounty hunter working together to find somebody on foot? How does that even make a like of sense?

<lj-embed id="17" />

I love He-Man as I think I have discussed before, but I must talk a little about this commercial.
-The day is playing with the kids. Good, except the Dad is playing the bad guys, who clearly have the upper hand. Way to be a dick Dad.
-Ramman is not really being sold well. His fantastic power seems to be very useless.
-I like how it is not emphasized not to put the parts in your mouth, but it is emphasized twice that you have to put Greyskull together
-Announcing you have a prisoner is a clever ruse, however change your voice or wear a costume!
-Also, don't open the door until you know you know who the prisoner is.

Stuff dreams are made of

Recently I've been having an odd experience. It's not a reoccurring dream but a reoccurring person and theme.

Now I never have nightmares. I have had only one dream that I guess that could be described as one, but I didn't wake up screaming or anything and I was like 8. On average I have very movie like dreams. There are cuts, pans, etc. If I am in it (which I am 90%) it's never from my point of view. They are generally odd. Never pleasant, but never bad. I don't know how to describe it other than odd. I also remember my dreams. Some I remember for years, but on average I can remember clearly dreams I had up to about five days ago. For example I have had dreams about the Ninja Turtles playing my in basketball, running a robot version of me through a maze after a person, and once I had a dream where I was a detective investigating murders but I turned out to be the murderer! As I said, they are just odd.

Recently, I've been having dreams about this one person who I work with that I like. I've been meaning to ask her out, but due to a lack of one on one time and balls I have been unable to. However, in the past two weeks she has been in about ten of my dreams and of those ten the main focus about seven or six times. However, these dreams aren't sex dreams. I think I have only ever had two sex dreams my entire life. These dreams are more of a romantic nature. For example last night in my dream I was at a party. It was a big party and for some reason a bunch of the teachers from work were there. The girl I like was coming to talk to me but other teacher would sort of get between us. We were trying to get a chance to talk, but other teachers were coming up to me and hitting on me, so I couldn't get to the teacher I liked. In the end I went home, then realized I shouldn't give up and went back. She did the same too, and we finally got to sit and talk. The night prior, was a far simpler affair. In that dream I would rush to a cafe to meet her. We would sit and talk, then when she tired of talking she'd just rest her head on my chest and I'd hold her. Two nights, prior the dream was about trying to hold her hand. I blame that one on watching Wall-E like two times that day. I think it was after date. I'm not sure, but I remember walking through a building and trying to hold her hand, and then just going somewhere hand in hand. That one is a bit more hazy, but you get the idea.

The thing that is odd for me is that this is a first. The first time I've had a reoccurring pattern in my dreams let alone the same person over and over again. The odd thing is that there have been women that I felt stronger about, and while I was infatuated with them I never had a dream about them. I've never even had my family appear that often in my dreams. Rarely they appear. The only thing I can assume is that my subconscious is more in love with this girl than I am.

Finding reasons to love again

The other night I watched the full special features disc of the wonderful 2 Disc edition of "The Fly" that Fox put out a couple years back. Talk about content. The main documentary is longer than the actual movie! As I was watching it I got thinking of a lot of things like "What was the first remake?" I was thinking like some old Western that ripped of a samurai movie then I thought about within country remake. If anybody knows I'd be curious. Then I started thinking about David Cronenberg.

I love me some Cronenberg. I can't think of a movie of his that I've seen that I haven't enjoyed or found interesting. Crash and Fast Company sitting on the edge of the lesser enjoyment/interesting category though. However the rest I love, and I think lots of it goes very underrated or people think wrongly of him. They think Cronenberg likes very visceral scenes and his movies are littered with them, which is odd because they'll go and watch CSI afterwards. In the documentary, I think it's Jeff Goldblum that points out that what Cronenberg does is make family movies. That doesn't mean movies for the family to enjoy and watch but movies about family, or I guess in broader terms, human relations. Which I started to think about, and then went back and started to watch some of his movies in the last 2 days to see this. It's so true. I mean look at his last three movies. Spider, A History of Violence, Eastern Promises are all very heavy and focused on these "family bonds." They are very clear in their messages on these areas. However, look at the Fly. Is it a horror movie about science gone wrong or is a drama about a love triangle? If one you dares says "I don't get the family connection in Dead Ringers" I will smack you!

The other thing that the one producer says which is true I guess and I am thinking about more and more is that actor's performances are always at their best if not the best they've ever been in a Cronenberg movie. The first thing I think of is Viggo Mortensen. I believe he is a good actor, but sorry LOTR fanboys and girls, his work in History of Violence was the best he ever did, and then he went and topped that in Eastern Promises. His work afterwards, was good but nowhere as near as that. However, those two have a weird vibe. They seems to draw the best from each other. If you had to chain an actor to director and they were never allowed to act/direct outside of each others movies, that would one of the first pairings I would make. However, I mean I think Christopher Walken in the Dead Zone is up there too. I mean he does very well in other supporting/cameo parts, but he has never carried a movie and given as good as a performance outside of Dead Zone. James Woods and Videodrome? Jeff Goldblum and The Fly? These require a bit more thinking and watching, but Jeremy Irons and Dead Ringers is another given.

Anyway, I love Cronenberg and these documentaries have made me love him even more. Go out and watch one of his movies and feel the love!

Is "Freedy vs Jason" canon?

I think some of you who know me know my love of the "Friday the 13th" movies. Love them. I am fully aware they are terrible movies. Well, the first one maybe not, but the rest really don't have a lot of redeeming features as far as critics and film buffs are concerned. However, damned if I don't love them. Hell I saw "Jason X" and "Freddy vs Jason" on opening nights and can even sit through "Jason Goes to Hell" and "Friday the 13th: A New Beginning!" Now you can keep your Freddies, Micheals, and Leatherfaces because those series have nothing on Jason! Nightmare was good but they turned the villain into a joke. "Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors" is the best because he gets to say his one-liners while being scary and menacing. In fact more time is spent being menacing than funny. After Dream Warriors he was like a bad stand-up that killed people... note to self, write movie about killer stand-up! I like Halloween, but the other movies never did much for me. I blame Season of the Witch for just throwing the whole series off the tracks. Jason and Micheal Meyers share a lot in common. Both don't talk. Both are human but seemingly have Wolverine leave healing powers or something. Both don't change much in looks (Well every movie Jason gets a new face but from 3 on it was hockey mask and grey and blue raggy clothes) either. However, the main difference is that Jason is just a fucking killing machine. Micheal Meyers was all about his home before the series made it about his sister and what fuck happened? Jason was said to be killing camp councilors but he was just killing anybody that came to the lake or his backyard. It mattered not if you were family, cripple, man, woman, young, old, fat, naked, cool, nerdy or dog! You got chopped! No, Jason goes to Hell is not canon I don't care what you say!

Anyway, so next month the new Friday the 13th is coming out. I am mixed. First, they are doing some smart things. They seem to be kinda compressing the first 3 films together. You get "The Town that Dreaded Sundown" Jason and hockey mask Jason. You get his mom telling the story. If I was rebooting the series this seems smart. People know the mask, but for him to appear just with it on would be odd. Also for all the tweens that have not seen the original making his mother the killer would be confusing. Remember this is a reboot/reimagining not a remake. Which leads me to what I don't like. Why? I mean the thing that was cool about the Friday the 13th movies was while there is a threads connecting each film to the next (e.g. Tommy Jarvis, him being chained to the bottom of the lake and starting the next film thusly) really you could just have a new group of kids show up in the area and be slaughtered and it would work. You could just as easily make part 11 or 12 (depending on your answer to the subject line) and have no one bat an eye. Does it really need to be retooled and made into a new series like "The Hills Have Eyes" or "Texas Chainsaw"? However, I enjoyed the new Texas Chainsaw. I enjoyed the original more but the new one, was all right. It kept the spirit of the first but changed enough to make it different and interesting. I'm hoping Micheal Bay can do that with this too.

Changing gears a little but keeping in the vein of Friday the 13th. It is getting a universal release. Which is odd for Japan because unlike back home new movies come out here on the Saturday and not Friday. Also, guess what comes out on Valentine's Day in Japan? My Bloody Valentine 3D! That makes perfect sense unlike this January nonsense (yes I realize it was moved to avoid going head to head with Friday the 13th) here! Anyway, a month ago I wore my Habs jersey to work for the first time. The one teacher that I like in that way, saw it and asked me about it. She thought it was cool and wanted to know what it was. I said a hockey jersey. She asked if I played hockey and I said only watch it. However, I asked her if she knew what hockey was (the seem to only know field hockey) and if she'd seen it. "Um, Jason?" and she made a stabbing motion. Straight out of Part 3 it was! However, that shows how ingrained into the pop culture Jason and his (dated)hockey mask have become. Also, how cool is it that a cute cool chick like the movies? Japanese on top of that (Japanese women rarely like/watch horror movies)! At this point I had no idea when the new Friday was "dropping" in 2009. I realized that this would be a perfect chance to ask her out. However, Friday night we could not go. We work to late and that would only leave the last show which would finish after last train. So when's the first day we could see it? Why the 14th, which is... Valentine's Day? Maybe it's me being paranoid or the nerves and self loathing kicking in, but that seems like a bad idea in my books. A) Teachers are not suppose to date and B) Even if it's friendly, asking somebody to go to dinner and a movie on Valentine's day seems like romance. I have no idea what to do, but I better decide quick!

So in summary. Friday the 13th = Best slasher movie series. New Friday the 13th = Dying to see but shields are up. Cameron = indecisive pussy. Also if you ever want to waste an hour of your life, by me a couple of bears and ask me what I think of the Nintendo Friday the 13th game. Less fucks than my "Frogs" rant, but more coherent! I have keep two large groups in bars enthralled in the last month by these rants. My one friend who knew my feelings on the subject encouraged it both times. He said I should turn it into a stand-up act just talking about old video games with power point. Think "Angry Video Game Nerd" but with humor that does not come from just shouting swears and more cunning allusions.

A challenge to you!!!

I'm running out of movies to see. I have not seen every movie that is for sure, but sometimes it feels like that. I go into the video store (because I can't join the Japanese Netflix... yet) and I look around and there is nothing. There are movies that I haven't seen but most of those movies I choose not to see for various reasons. Reason 1, I know they are POS. I don't need to watch "Maid in Manhattan" or whatever it is called to know it's crap. Reason 2, Japan loves direct to DVD and made for TV movies. They get put on to DVD and shipped over here, where people watch them because they don't really know what bad acting foreigners are like. I kid you not, I saw the frickin' Meat Market movies in the video store once. The lame ass horror movies mad in Victoria by the adult bookshop owner. Seriously, what the fuck? And any made for TV Sci-Fi channel movie comes over as well. Reason 3, there is not a whole lot of selection. Japanese people don't really do older movies. If you can find something from before the 80s it's a rare find indeed.

Anyway, I want a good movie to watch that I haven't seen before. Think you got some hidden gem that'll blow my socks off? Hit me with it!

A quick look back at 2008

Granted I've pretty much given up on livejournal, but I shall write none the less. Why? Well, A, I'm writing for like three people and I find that when I sit down to write it's all negative stuff. It's like my venting space. I have so many rants that I wrote and didn't post out of fear of coming across asshole-ish. I thought I would thought twitter but I can't update it with my cell phone so what's the point. Also given up on facebook.

Anyway, I decided to do a quick wrap-up of 2008.

Happening
BEST: Getting a job after 4 months of unemployment
WORST: Father's passing

Quote about me
BEST:"If Cameron doesn't know it, it probably isn't worth knowing about."
WORST:"I can't be seen with you because you are fat."

Drink
BEST: Pepsi White
WORST: Melon Cream soda

Food tried
BEST: Lamb (yes I had it for the first time just last year)
WORST: Hijiki which is like dried sea plant

Movie
BEST: In Bruges (not the 'best' but the one I probably enjoyed the most)
WORST: Southland Tales (Came out last year but I watched it this year)

TV Show
BEST: Lost. The last season kicked ass and took names.
WORST: Heroes. I'm still not sure why I still watch this show...

Book
BEST: Elephants on Acid
WORST: Literally the Best Grammar Book Ever!

Video game
BEST: Mass Effect
WORST: The World Ends With You. I'm sure it's a good game, but the style and designed just pissed me off too much to play more than an hour of it.

2009
BEST: Big raise coming my way
WORST: More working hours

Six year olds fear for my life

A sad but true story. So I was teaching a class of first graders. They like me and are a silly bunch. One of the things we do every class is ask "Do you like...." questions, so they practice "Yes I do" and "No I don't" just to get those patterns down. Usually we ask about fruit or foods however for some reason on Friday they were asking each other about the other people in the class "Hinata, do you like Yukihiro?" and that. So then this following conversation occurs.

"Cameron teacher, do you like Cameron?"
"Do I like me?"
"Yes"
Fishing for a laugh I say "No I don't"
"(He doesn't like himself)" Shin says in Japanese
"(Wah, he might kill himself)" Hinata says in Japanese
"(You're right!)"Yukihiro says in Japanese
"Cameron teacher, how old are you?" Hinata askes
"25"
"(25 and no girlfriend that's sad)"Hinata says
"(No wonder he hates himself and wants to die)" Yukihiro says

Get in the holiday mood

This year has not been fun or enjoyable for me at least. Now, it's Christmas time, my favourite time of the year, and I can not get in the Christmas mood. I can't. I will be alone on Christmas and New Years. No friends willing to make time for me over the holidays, and just a general feeling of loneliness. Sucks. So I found some pictures to help you get into the holiday mood.

Remember he knows when you are sleeping....
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!

Boo-urns Boo-urns

I was just thinking about movies. That's a bit of a lie because I'm always thinking of movies. However, I was thinking about the movies I've seen this year. None of them have really stood out. There were some notable ones. Robert Downey Jr. owned Iron Man and Tropic Thunder and made them fun movies. Transsiberian was interesting but good have done a little more. The Hulk might not be the best comic book movie but it was fun and felt like a comic book. I think the movie that I enjoyed most was Forgetting Sarah Marshal. It was just funny with a good heart. Sadly, Japan gets movies slower so there are some movies that aren't out yet that I really want to see, but so far not impressed with this year. What movie has impressed you the most?

Go to Flickr and enter your answer in the search, choose a picture, then use the HTML code to copy and
paste in the answer.

What is your first name?

Where do you live?

This is my shoutout to Feebs, because of that creepy tiltshift animation she posted.
White is the black... brown... dark brown... what the hell colour is cola anyway?

I am in love. Here name; Pepsi White

As the bottle clearly states it's Pepsi and yogurt flavored. Pull your tongues back in. I know what you're saying, "Ew, why?" but it's actually really good. Or I'm really into it. First, in Japan there are tons of yogurt flavored things. Drinks, candies, etc. So the yogurt itself is not really that odd. Also, because Pepsi is number two that means they are willing to try odd things to become number one. What does it taste like? Well, first and foremost it does taste like Pepsi. In fact it is 0 calorie Pepsi just like Pepsi Nex. However, the yogurt flavoring covers the ass taste of Pepsi Nex. It's like if someone mixed a sports drink with a cola. It's good! Stop looking at me like that.

Trailer Park

Let's see what we can find...

Gran Torino
I loves me some Eastwood. I will not lie. Maybe I am a bit bias. Hell, I own The Dead Pool that should show my bias right there. Anyway I think it could be good. Nobody plays pissed off slightly racist like Clint. I hope for some reason that this will be like Unforgiven and his sayonara to action pics (as an actor anyway.)

Fear(s) of the Dark
Wow. I can begin to describe how much I want to see this movie. Just look at that animation! Wow, such style and impact and it's horror. Feeds, Lon, ain't it fantastic?

JCVD
At least the mullet is gone...

Synedocheny New York
Charlie Kaufman's newest movie which he himself is directing. Great cast too, which brings up one thing that irked me about this trailer. You clearly see Tom Noonan and yet he is left out of the names shown. However, on the site his name is there. Why not throw him a bone? He was Frankenstein's monster and the superior Francis Dollahyde, which reminds me if you have not seen Manhunter you should.

Repo! The Genetic Opera
I do like rock operas, and this one looks as bizarre and colourful as they come. However, Paris Hilton? Though her being followed by Orge is my kind of juxtaposition!

Second thoughts

I just wrote a very lengthy post about an article I recently read about Family Guy. About how the author of the article was suggesting that a backlash against the show has begun. It was written very recently (they reference the rape scene in the season opener of South Park so it has to be recently) and it struck me as odd. Personal feelings aside I would argue there was always backlash in a way against the show and more so since its return. In my post I wrote about my feelings toward the show(negative if you must know) and feelings about the backlash. Then I wrote in length about how idiotic I found the fan response to said backlash. I concluded with talking about how I don't agree with venomous posting nor understand it. Then I realized that in a round about way that's what I was doing. I highly doubt it was overly venomous because I was using facts and reasoning to support my thoughts and pointing out the flaws in supporters of the shows arguing techniques. However, rather the risk of being hypocritical I've decided to remove it. There is nothing worse than people who attack the things they themselves do or are guilty of.

Just a quick point. Over the summer a critic "dared" to review "The second coming of American cinema" aka The Dark Knight, negatively. Said critic received death threats and threats to cut his face like the Jokers to be "less serious." In fact every time I've seen somebody critique the movie I see the same level of venom if not more. I just don't get how anything as trivial as one's view/opinion a TV show or movie could elicit such harsh responses. We all have different tastes. There is no movie/book/tv show/etc. that everybody would agree is good. There are some where 99% will agree but there is still 1% that don't.

MTV knows stuff

Remember "The Head" and "Aeon Flux?" Man MTV had some good animation. Well, that tradition continues in Japan for Japanese MTV or as they call it "MTV Japan." What follows is best described as Japanese Adult Swim. These are episodes of a show called "The World of Golden Eggs." Which is a show just about these people in this town. Though suppose to be in America they keep things awfully Japanese. Also the subtitles are so-so. I mean some of the things they say you just can't translate it and have it be as funny. Still, hopefully you'll enjoy the English subtitles. Maybe not for everybody, but it cracks me up.

<lj-embed id="7" />
<lj-embed id="8" />
<lj-embed id="9" />

In an effort to make reviewing more fun I shall give review a bunch of movies I've seen lately with one word! Can it be done... no. So I'll make it 5 syllables! Okay, 1 word, then five syllables. Happy now? Fine Haikus! You happy!

Speed Racer
Is this a kids flick?
Kids know and care about stocks?
My eyes are bleeding.

The Strangers
Unscary sadsack
Just say no to torture porn
Sadomasochists

Wanted
Start: Funny good times
The middle: Bloated like me
End: Satisfying

The Incredible Hulk
It feels like it should
Big fists, big feet, purple pants
Tim Roth got kicked...
You know where you find sympathy in the dictionary? Between shit and syphilis

You may have noticed that I haven't updated lately like a promised. The reason is tragic. My father, Jim Bertram, passed away. I found out on Friday night which leads me to believe it happened last Thursday. Now I think only one or two of you actually met my father, but he was a good man. In June he got the news that he was terminal with cancer. Way back in 2004 he had prostate cancer. The removed it and all tested showed clear. Then last year he had a suspicious looking mole. Upon checking they found that it too was cancer which never showed up on the other tests. That too was removed. They sent him to Vancouver for a full body scan. In June the results showed he had it almost everywhere. I was able to go home in July and August to spend 3 weeks with them. He passed away peacefully at home.

However, none of you should feel sad. If you knew my Dad it's the last thing he'd want. If you did know him there is no funeral but there will be a celebration of his life this Saturday at my house. You are welcome to stop by.

The subject line is something he'd always say to us when we were feeling sorry for ourselves. The best comeback to it was "There are lots of words in between them." To which he'd say "Yes, and sympathy is one of them."

Literabble

I use to play a lot of Scrabble and Literati. However I was abandoned by those that I played with and now just have myself to play with. I hate people that spell short words when playing. There is only one exception. That is making a small word between or next to an unplayable area. That's where this list comes in handy. Not only do these words use hard to use letters but short words to fill those gaps. So I present to this list stolen from www.mentalfloss.com a great website to get nuggets of useless information.

Quick 10: 10 Words That Will Help You Win at Scrabble

1. Aa. And I don’t mean the acronym for Alcoholics Anonymous, either. Aa is “basaltic lava having a rough surface.”
2. Qat – a flowering plant native to East Africa and the Arabian peninsula.
3. Zax – a slater or slate mason, or the tool used to cut and punch nail holes in roofing slate.
4. Cwm – a valley, especially one created by glacial movement. Be warned: this one won’t get you many points, but it is good for using up pesky, low-score consonants taking up valuable space on your rack.
5. Xu – Vietnamese money
6. Qua – as or as being, or in the character of.
7. Suq – a market, or part of a market, in an Arab city.
8. Adz – an axe-like tool.
9. Jo – sweetheart or dear
10. Qadi – a judge in the Muslim community.
