I think some of you who know me know my love of the "Friday the 13th" movies. Love them. I am fully aware they are terrible movies. Well, the first one maybe not, but the rest really don't have a lot of redeeming features as far as critics and film buffs are concerned. However, damned if I don't love them. Hell I saw "Jason X" and "Freddy vs Jason" on opening nights and can even sit through "Jason Goes to Hell" and "Friday the 13th: A New Beginning!" Now you can keep your Freddies, Micheals, and Leatherfaces because those series have nothing on Jason! Nightmare was good but they turned the villain into a joke. "Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors" is the best because he gets to say his one-liners while being scary and menacing. In fact more time is spent being menacing than funny. After Dream Warriors he was like a bad stand-up that killed people... note to self, write movie about killer stand-up! I like Halloween, but the other movies never did much for me. I blame Season of the Witch for just throwing the whole series off the tracks. Jason and Micheal Meyers share a lot in common. Both don't talk. Both are human but seemingly have Wolverine leave healing powers or something. Both don't change much in looks (Well every movie Jason gets a new face but from 3 on it was hockey mask and grey and blue raggy clothes) either. However, the main difference is that Jason is just a fucking killing machine. Micheal Meyers was all about his home before the series made it about his sister and what fuck happened? Jason was said to be killing camp councilors but he was just killing anybody that came to the lake or his backyard. It mattered not if you were family, cripple, man, woman, young, old, fat, naked, cool, nerdy or dog! You got chopped! No, Jason goes to Hell is not canon I don't care what you say!
Anyway, so next month the new Friday the 13th is coming out. I am mixed. First, they are doing some smart things. They seem to be kinda compressing the first 3 films together. You get "The Town that Dreaded Sundown" Jason and hockey mask Jason. You get his mom telling the story. If I was rebooting the series this seems smart. People know the mask, but for him to appear just with it on would be odd. Also for all the tweens that have not seen the original making his mother the killer would be confusing. Remember this is a reboot/reimagining not a remake. Which leads me to what I don't like. Why? I mean the thing that was cool about the Friday the 13th movies was while there is a threads connecting each film to the next (e.g. Tommy Jarvis, him being chained to the bottom of the lake and starting the next film thusly) really you could just have a new group of kids show up in the area and be slaughtered and it would work. You could just as easily make part 11 or 12 (depending on your answer to the subject line) and have no one bat an eye. Does it really need to be retooled and made into a new series like "The Hills Have Eyes" or "Texas Chainsaw"? However, I enjoyed the new Texas Chainsaw. I enjoyed the original more but the new one, was all right. It kept the spirit of the first but changed enough to make it different and interesting. I'm hoping Micheal Bay can do that with this too.
Changing gears a little but keeping in the vein of Friday the 13th. It is getting a universal release. Which is odd for Japan because unlike back home new movies come out here on the Saturday and not Friday. Also, guess what comes out on Valentine's Day in Japan? My Bloody Valentine 3D! That makes perfect sense unlike this January nonsense (yes I realize it was moved to avoid going head to head with Friday the 13th) here! Anyway, a month ago I wore my Habs jersey to work for the first time. The one teacher that I like in that way, saw it and asked me about it. She thought it was cool and wanted to know what it was. I said a hockey jersey. She asked if I played hockey and I said only watch it. However, I asked her if she knew what hockey was (the seem to only know field hockey) and if she'd seen it. "Um, Jason?" and she made a stabbing motion. Straight out of Part 3 it was! However, that shows how ingrained into the pop culture Jason and his (dated)hockey mask have become. Also, how cool is it that a cute cool chick like the movies? Japanese on top of that (Japanese women rarely like/watch horror movies)! At this point I had no idea when the new Friday was "dropping" in 2009. I realized that this would be a perfect chance to ask her out. However, Friday night we could not go. We work to late and that would only leave the last show which would finish after last train. So when's the first day we could see it? Why the 14th, which is... Valentine's Day? Maybe it's me being paranoid or the nerves and self loathing kicking in, but that seems like a bad idea in my books. A) Teachers are not suppose to date and B) Even if it's friendly, asking somebody to go to dinner and a movie on Valentine's day seems like romance. I have no idea what to do, but I better decide quick!
So in summary. Friday the 13th = Best slasher movie series. New Friday the 13th = Dying to see but shields are up. Cameron = indecisive pussy. Also if you ever want to waste an hour of your life, by me a couple of bears and ask me what I think of the Nintendo Friday the 13th game. Less fucks than my "Frogs" rant, but more coherent! I have keep two large groups in bars enthralled in the last month by these rants. My one friend who knew my feelings on the subject encouraged it both times. He said I should turn it into a stand-up act just talking about old video games with power point. Think "Angry Video Game Nerd" but with humor that does not come from just shouting swears and more cunning allusions.
